What AI visibility means for a local service business, and why it is not SEO

Customers now ask ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Gemini who to hire. Here is what decides whether an assistant names your business, and why ranking on Google does not settle it.

A homeowner in Bloomington has water in the basement at 9pm. Ten years ago she typed “plumber near me” into Google and picked from a page of links. Today she opens ChatGPT, or the assistant built into her phone, and types “who should I call for a flooded basement in Bloomington.” She gets two or three names and a sentence about each. She calls the first one.

That answer is what we mean by AI visibility. Not whether your website exists. Whether an assistant, asked the question your customer actually asks, gives your name.

Why this is a different problem from SEO

Search engine optimization is about a results page. You compete for position on a list of ten, and a customer scans that list and chooses.

An AI assistant does not hand the customer a list to scan. It makes the choice, or narrows it to two or three, and explains why. There is no position seven. You are named or you are not.

The inputs overlap. A well-built site helps in both places. But the assistant is doing something a search engine does not do: it reads your pages, it reads what other sites say about you, and it decides whether it can confidently recommend you. Confidence is the currency. A business the model half-understands does not get named, even if it ranks.

What decides whether you get named

From running these questions across the four major assistants for local businesses, the same factors keep coming up.

Can the model read you at all? Some sites block AI crawlers without knowing it. Some are built in ways that leave the model with almost no text to work from. If the assistant cannot read your site, the best it can do is repeat whatever a directory says about you.

Do your pages answer the question? “We offer a full range of HVAC solutions” tells a model nothing. “We repair furnaces in Bloomington-Normal, same day, and here is what a diagnostic visit costs” is an answer it can use. Pages written as answers get cited. Brochure pages do not.

Does your structured data say who you are? Schema markup is the part of a page written for machines. It states plainly: this is a business, this is its name, this is where it serves, these are its services. Most local sites have none, or have a broken version a plugin added.

Does the rest of the internet agree with you? Assistants cross-check. If your name, address, and phone number differ across Google, Yelp, the BBB, and three directories, the model treats you as uncertain. If your reviews are thin or old, it has less to say about you than about the competitor with two hundred recent ones.

Is anyone else citing you? A mention in a local news piece, a supplier’s dealer locator, an industry directory, a chamber of commerce page. These are the sources the model reads when it decides who is real.

Why it matters more for you than for a national brand

A national brand gets named because it is famous. A local service business gets named because it is legible: easy to read, easy to verify, easy to recommend without embarrassment.

That is good news, because legibility is something you control. You cannot become famous by Friday. You can make your site readable, your pages direct, your listings consistent, and your reviews current. Those are the things that move the answer.

It also matters because the stakes per customer are high. A furnace install, a roof, an implant case, a retained legal client, a policy that renews for years. Losing one of those to a competitor because an assistant did not know you existed is expensive in a way a missed click never was.

How to know where you stand

Ask the assistants yourself. Open ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Gemini and type the question a customer would type, with your town in it. Note who gets named. Do it for five or six questions. That is a rough audit, and it takes fifteen minutes.

If you would rather have it done properly, with a fixed question set you can re-run every month, request the free audit. You get a written report in 48 hours whether or not we ever work together.
