AI for small business

Some of the calls coming into your business will not be from a person. Google’s Gemini assistant can now phone a business on a customer’s behalf to ask for a quote, check availability or book an appointment. For a plumber, a dental office or a landscaper, that call is a customer asking for work, and how your front desk handles it decides whether the job gets booked.

The feature is small for now. Here is what Google has published, and what to put in place before these calls become routine.

What Google has published

TechCrunch reported on September 24, 2026 that Google is testing a feature called Call for Me. Google said it was starting at a small scale because “real-world conversations are nuanced.” Google’s help page for the feature sets out how it works:

  1. Who can use it. The customer must be 18 or older and in the US, using a Pixel 11 with a US SIM card. They also need a Google AI subscription, the Public Beta of the Phone by Google app and the device language set to English. Google says: “We’re gradually making this feature available to eligible users.”
  2. What it calls for. Gemini can “Get business hours, product availability, service quotes, and other information.” It can also book, confirm and manage appointments and reservations, navigate phone menus and wait on hold.
  3. How it opens the call. Gemini says it is “an AI assistant from Google calling on a recorded line on your behalf,” and gives the customer’s name. Before the call, the customer reviews the number Gemini will dial and the “details it will share, like your name and contact info.”
  4. The customer can step in. “Your microphone is muted by default.” The customer can tap Take over at any point. Afterward they can read the full transcript and listen to the recording in their Phone app.
  5. What it cannot do. It cannot complete financial transactions or share financial details, passwords, Social Security numbers or health information. It cannot be used for telemarketing. It only calls US numbers, and there are daily limits on how many calls it makes for each customer.

There is also a way to stop the calls. Google’s help page says: “If you don’t want to get automated calls from other Gemini users, you can opt out.” The opt-out page asks for a phone number, verifies it with a one-time code by text or call, and then: “Once you opt out, your number will be added to a block list and you will no longer receive automated calls from Gemini.”

Separately, Google Business Profile has its own automated calls. Google’s Business Profile help says it may call on behalf of customers “to book appointments” and to confirm prices and availability of products or services. Those calls are “monitored and recorded for quality assurance.” Business owners control them under More, then Business Profile settings, then Advanced settings, in a section called “Google automated calls and text messages.” The profile must be verified to change these settings. Google says these customer-request calls are not available in Indiana, Louisiana, Minnesota, Montana or Nebraska.

Neither page says whether one control covers the other. Treat them as two separate switches.

What it means for a local service business

Treat the AI caller as a customer

The person behind the call has already picked your business and asked for a quote or a booking. The assistant gives their name and passes on the contact details they approved. Whoever answers your phone should know this is coming, so they do not hang up on what sounds like a robocall.

A short script helps. When the caller says it is an AI assistant from Google, answer the question, confirm a time if it asks for one, and repeat the customer’s name and callback number back so it lands in the transcript.

Have a quote answer ready

“Service quotes” is one of the first things Google lists. Most service businesses cannot quote a job blind, but you can give the answers a customer would accept from a person: your service call fee, a typical price range for common jobs, how soon you can come out and whether you serve their area.

Remember that the customer gets a recording and a transcript. Whatever your staff says on that call is on the customer’s phone in writing. Make sure it matches the prices and policies on your website.

Plan for deposits and payments

Gemini cannot make payments. If you take a deposit to hold an appointment, decide how you will collect it after the call. Sending a payment link to the contact details the customer shared is one way to do it. Google’s Business Profile page also says Google “will never ask for payment, credit card information, or account passwords.” Any caller claiming to be Google who asks for those is not Google.

Check your number everywhere

Google’s help page shows the customer the number before Gemini dials, but it does not say where Gemini finds that number. Make sure the phone number on your Business Profile, your website and your main directory listings is the same, current and answered during your posted hours.

Do not opt out by reflex

The opt-out puts your number on a block list. After that, Gemini will not call you for customers who asked it to. That is your choice to make, but know what you are turning off. The same goes for the “Bookings and inquiries from customers” switch in your Business Profile settings.

What did not change

Access is narrow. The feature needs a Pixel 11, a paid Google AI subscription and a beta phone app, and Google is rolling it out gradually. Most businesses will see few of these calls for now.

Getting the call also depends on something that comes earlier. The customer has to choose your business before asking Gemini to call it. No AI engine can be bought or guaranteed, and this feature does not change which businesses AI answers recommend. It changes what happens after a customer has made that choice.

The short version

Google’s Gemini can now phone a business to get a quote or book an appointment for a customer. It says it is an AI assistant from Google on a recorded line, and the customer gets the transcript. Brief your staff, have quote answers ready, keep your phone number consistent everywhere, and think before using either of Google’s opt-out controls.
